Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a merchant statement analysis or fee comparison?

A merchant statement analysis is a detailed review of your current processing statement. We break down every rate and fee you are paying, compare it against Union’s pricing, and show you exactly where your business can save. You get a clear, line-by-line picture of your true cost of accepting cards.

Is Union’s statement analysis tool free?

Yes. Our statement analysis and savings estimate are completely free, with no cost and no obligation. Upload your statement and our team will deliver a clear summary of your current costs and your potential savings with Union.

Is the statement analysis secure and confidential?

Yes. Every statement we receive is handled securely and kept strictly confidential. For added peace of mind, we recommend removing sensitive identifiers such as your Merchant ID (MID) before uploading.

How are payment processing fees generally determined by credit card processors?

Processors price their services in different ways, which is why two businesses with similar sales can pay very different amounts. Your total cost is shaped by several factors:

  • Your processor’s pricing model
  • The mix of card types your customers use
  • How cards are accepted (in person, online, or keyed in)
  • Interchange and card brand fees
  • Your industry
  • Your business’s risk profile

Our team reviews each of these factors to make sure you are paying a fair rate for your business.

What cost structure does Union Payments utilize?

Fair, transparent pricing has been central to our mission from day one. Union uses Interchange Plus pricing, widely regarded as the most transparent and cost-effective model in the industry. It is especially valuable for small and mid-sized businesses that want to know exactly what they are paying and why.

What is Interchange Plus Pricing?

Interchange Plus pricing passes the actual wholesale cost of each transaction, known as interchange, directly through to you, plus processing fees. You see exactly what the card networks charge and exactly what we charge, with nothing hidden in between.

Flat rate pricing works differently. It applies one uniform rate to every transaction regardless of its true cost, which often means you are overpaying on lower-cost cards while the processor keeps the difference.

How is your interchange rate determined?

Interchange rates are set by the card networks, such as Visa and Mastercard, together with the banks that issue the cards. Every processor pays the same interchange rates. What sets processors apart is how much they add on top. Interchange for each transaction is based on:

  • Card brand: Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express
  • Card type: credit, debit, or prepaid
  • Business type: your industry category
  • Transaction type: in person, online, or card not present
  • Risk: the likelihood of fraud associated with the transaction
  • Cardholder rewards: premium and rewards cards carry higher interchange

With Interchange Plus, you pay these costs as they are, with no inflated markup.

Does Union offer high volume discounts for businesses processing large numbers of transactions?

Yes. Union offers custom pricing for high-volume businesses. Your rate is tailored to your monthly volume and specific needs, so the more you process, the more you can save. Schedule a call with our team to receive a personalized quote.

How do Union’s rates compare to Square’s?
Square charges a flat rate on every transaction. Union uses Interchange Plus pricing, which passes through the true cost of each card with transparent processing fees and no hidden fees. For most businesses, this results in meaningful savings. For clients who prefer the simplicity of a flat rate, Union offers flat rate pricing starting at 2.49% + 10¢ per transaction, still lower than Square’s standard in-person rate of 2.6% + 15¢.
Are there any setup fees to use Union’s services?

No. There are no setup fees to switch to Union. Our team handles the transition for you so you can start saving without any upfront cost.

Does Union charge equipment leasing fees?

No. Union does not lease equipment, and we recommend that businesses avoid equipment leases altogether, as they often cost far more than the equipment is worth. Instead, we offer quality equipment at fair prices. Many clients qualify for free equipment, and others can purchase directly from us at competitive rates, with no lease and no long-term contract.
